Leonid Gomonov: Traveling with a Sketchbook

"Love for nature, the desire to see something new in its rapidly changing states, and the ability to capture his delight on canvas are the things that motivate the artist"

Leonid Gomonov is a landscape artist. It was in this genre that he found his calling, creative style and spiritual component, which, like air, needs recharge in the form of new impressions and vivid emotions. Therefore, he doesn't stay long in the studio, but hits the road with his faithful companion, a sketchbook, storing not only tools and materials for painting, but also just painted sketches that smell of fresh paint.

Love for nature, the desire to see something new in its rapidly changing states, and the ability to capture his delight on canvas are the things that motivate the artist. His plein-air sketches and paintings are filled with the aroma of meadow grasses, shrouded in the foggy gray haze; breathe the hot haze of the Mediterranean coast, and excite us with the fiery color of autumn foliage. And many more amazing and unique natural phenomena, captured by the master’s brush, invariably find a response in everyone’s soul and give rise to a sublime sense of beauty and harmony.

Leonid was born in Slavgorod, Mogilev region (1953), but lives and works in Minsk. He graduated from the Minsk State Art College named after A. Glebov (1974) and the Academy of Arts (1991). In 1991 he became a member of the Belarusian Union of Artists.

Thanks to his vast experience in plein-air painting, Leonid Gomonov was the permanent chairman of the jury of the International Contest for Children and Youth “In My Homeland” for more than 10 years (2005–2016). In 2010, the artist became an associate of the International Academy of Culture and Art. He was awarded “Philanthropist” and “In the Name of Life on Earth” medals for the nobility of thoughts and deeds by the International Charitable Foundation “Patrons of the Century”, as well as medals “For Merit” and “20 years of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan” by the Foundation "The Memory of Afgan".

Leonid Gomonov's paintings were exhibited both at home and abroad; they can be found in art museums, professional galleries and private collections of Lithuania, Russia, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece.

The current exhibition includes landscapes painted over the past 10 years. Over the years, the artist visited Central Russia, the Kola Peninsula, Israel, Karachay-Cherkess Republic, Norway, and Finland. And this is not a complete list of locations where his paintings were born.
